About SettlersSettlers is the junior representative program for the Barossa Valley. It is for players who are committed to high level competition and provides an opportunity for players to experience elite junior sport.Selected players will be representing the Barossa Valley in the SA Country Junior Championships, against other country associations from around the state. In the lead up to the Championships, teams will participate in various country carnivals held by our, and other, associations. The program includes teams for boys and girls in age groups from U10 to U18 and all players participating in the BVABA local competition are eligible to trial for team selection. Our U10 Settlers is an introductory development experience for our youngest players, with reduced playing commitments and a shorter season.Opportunities also exist within the Settlers program for coach and referee development. Team SelectionA trial process is run in August of each year to select Settlers teams. Notifications for trials are provided to local clubs, posted on the BVABA website and Facebook page and advertised at The Rex during local competition. Players are required to register to trial to assist with trial planning. The trial process:• Ensures that player skills are evaluated prior to selection.• Identifies players who are committed to participating in representative basketball.• Establishes eligible player numbers for each age group.Three trial dates are offered, with players required to attend a minimum of two sessions to be eligible for team selection. Selections are made by the Junior Settlers Coordinator, nominated team coach (where possible), and independent coaching panel.During the trial process players are evaluated for their:• Skill level and training effort.• Ability to listen and follow instructions (‘coachability’).• Ability to work in a team.• Physical attributes and skill level to fill specified positions on the team. Key positions in basketball are point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and centre. These positions are often numbered 1 – 5 and each requires a different skill set and an ability to work together as a unit for a team to be successful. Player selections are made to ensure team balance.Team announcements are posted to the BVABA website and a notification for this will be posted on the BVABA Facebook Page.Every effort is made to select competitive teams, with the goal to have a division one side in each age group and a development team in each age group.
